More than 400 KELOLAND families came out tonight to enjoy a warm Thanksgiving meal. The annual event drew record numbers.
The Volunteers of America Bowden Youth Center hosted its 9th annual Thanksgiving dinner tonight. It was made possible by organizers and volunteers, and those who came out say their efforts didn't go unnoticed.
The holiday spirit rang true at this KELOLAND youth center complete with hot meals, drinks, and desert.
"Every little bit helps, every little bit helps," Robert Paige said.
Robert Paige and his four children were among the first in line, just barely beating the rush.
"I'm not surprised to see the line grow that fast, it's a lot of people that really appreciate these meals," Paige said.
But, organizers with the Volunteers of America and members of Our Savior Lutheran Church did much more than fill stomachs—they provided entertainment and helped pass out hygiene items, hats, mittens, and scarves. Paige says he and his family are grateful for the help.
"Saves me a lot of time and energy, raising four kids, I need all the help I can get," Paige said.
Organizers expected a large turnout, but even the crowds surprised them. They say the economy is causing more families to ask for help.
"Each and every day, the numbers are up, the needs are up," Nicole Burger with Volunteers of America said.
That's why Paige says he appreciates the gesture even more. He used to volunteer before times got tough.
"I used to enjoy doing it, I've been on both sides of the line, and I appreciate the other end too," Paige said.
About 250 families were served last year. Tonight's entire meal and entertainment was provided by volunteers with Our Savior Lutheran Church.
