Volunteers of America community resource case managers collaborate with the South Dakota Department of Social Services and are specifically dedicated to assisting youth with independent living. Case managers assist young people who are currently in the custody of the Department of Social Services or who were in DSS custody at age 18 with the following services:
- Starter kit money
- College or vo-tech tuition
- Rent, security deposit, and hook-up fee payment assistance
- Independent living workshops twice a year
- Four-day teen conference each summer
- Case management services specifically targeted to independent living topics such as employment, education, budgeting, cooking, transportation, housing, interpersonal skills and health care
