Clothing, appliances and furniture; for years, the Volunteers of America Thrift Store in Sioux Falls has helped families in need get what they need at a discounted price. But now the organization needs help, in the form of donations; that's because demand has tripled.
Twenty-year-old Steven Groom is one of the Volunteers of America Thrift Store's loyal customers.
"They helped me out when I didn't have the money go get stuff. A bed, they helped me get some shirts, jeans, shoes," Groom said.
But lately, the store's seen a lot of new faces and a huge increase in demand.
"There's a lot of families that are looking for clothing for their children and aren't able to afford it. They can come down here and get it at an affordable price," Kat Christensen, Volunteers of America Thrift Store Manager, said.
They're not only helping people with little money but those who don't have any at all. A voucher system is helping the homeless get the basics to get back on their feet.
"A couple shirts, a couple pairs of pants, some kitchen items, the necessities that you need to make it to live on your own," Christensen said.
But to keep up with the number of people coming through the doors, the organization could really use some help. What they need is men's jeans, kitchen appliances and furniture.
Organizers say the economy is forcing families to cut back and even cut out certain purchases. But by donating any gently used items here, those who would otherwise go without will be able to take home what they need.
"People of all types can come into the store and walk out feeling good," Christensen said.
If you're interested in donating, just drop off items at the location or call and set up a pick up time for free.
