In 2011, the Veterans Outreach opened its doors in Sioux Falls, with the purpose of serving homeless and at-risk veterans. Since then, our center has been providing veterans and their families a place to wash cloths, take a shower, enjoy a hot meal or search for jobs on a computer. Some might argue the greatest service provided is the feeling of community and belonging for veterans.
Recently, due to budget cuts from Veteran Affairs, the Veterans Outreach has struggled to remain open. The facility was scheduled to close at the end of August, but due to generous support from our community, we have been able to stay open for those who need us most. Although our funding has deceased, we are committed to keeping this precious service alive.
"The goal is to keep the veterans outreach open through the winter. We want there to be a safe, warm place for our veterans to go where they are supported by other veterans. We are looking into alternative sources of funding to sustain the facility," John Hart, Managing Director, said.
