We’re Celebrating 121 Years!

Today, March 8, 2017, is Volunteers of America’s Founders Day – we’re celebrating 121 years! Coincidentally, March 8 is also International Women’s Day. Volunteers of America and Volunteers of America, Dakotas has a rich history of serving and advocating for women. This service began with a remarkable woman leader and Volunteers of America founder, Maud Booth.

In the late 1800’s Ballington and Maud Booth came to America with the vision of “reaching and uplifting” the American people. Their mission was simple – ‘Go wherever was needed, and do whatever comes to hand”. For Maud, this meant spreading God’s love in prisons and half-way houses. This strong and powerful female was referred to as ‘mother’ by some of the country’s most hardened and in-need populations. Additionally, Maud advocated for the rights of vulnerable women, recognizing their potential to positively influence society.
