Families across our community know how COVID-related school closures impacted students’ learning, and now we’re beginning to see the full extent of this impact. Elementary and middle school math achievement scores fell by 5-10 percentile points in 2020 as a result of lost learning. Volunteers of America, Dakotas’ out-of-school time programs are helping students make up for this loss by providing tutoring and homework help afterschool.
“Every day our students are practicing their math skills,” says Cassidy Frederick, Volunteers of America, Dakotas Youth Center Coordinator. “From expanding on the lessons learned in their school classrooms to help completing their homework assignments all the way to learning new lessons to catch them up or prepare them for what they will be learning in school going forward.”
